Calls Grow for Schools to Ditch Formal Uniforms
A number of children’s organisations are calling on schools to consider changing from traditional formal uniforms to activewear alternatives. The campaign is led by Outdoor Play and Learning (Opal), and supported by groups such as Play England, the Youth Sport Trust, and Children’s Scrapstore.
The goal is to encourage “always-active” schoolwear — clothing that supports daily movement, physical activity, and outdoor play throughout the school day.
What Is an Active Uniform?
Active school uniforms are designed with comfort and flexibility in mind. Instead of blazers, shirts, and dress shoes, pupils wear:
-
Joggers or leggings
-
Polo shirts or sports tops (often house-coloured)
-
Trainers or supportive footwear
The idea is to reduce restrictions on movement and make it easier for children to be physically active at any time, not just during PE.
Schools Already Making the Switch
Several schools across the South West of England have already adopted the activewear approach.

Points of Debate
Not all feedback has been the same. At Chilthorne Domer Church School near Yeovil, headteacher Nichola Chesterton said the idea of changing the uniform has divided opinion.
-
Some pupils prefer traditional uniforms for focus and structure
-
Others feel relaxed clothing may not suit formal occasions or reflect the school’s identity
-
Some families value the tradition of a formal uniform, particularly in church schools
Reported Benefits
Schools trialling active uniforms have highlighted a number of possible advantages:
-
Greater comfort throughout the day
-
More opportunities for spontaneous physical activity
-
Less time wasted changing for PE lessons
-
Reduced costs for families
-
Positive impact on concentration and confidence
-
Support for both physical and mental well-being
An Evolving Conversation
The conversation around school uniforms continues to grow. Some schools are exploring how uniform choices can support learning and well-being, while others are holding on to long-standing traditions that reinforce identity, structure, and focus.
As with many changes in education, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Each school is considering what works best for its pupils, staff, and wider community.
